pushing the envelope.<\/h3>\n<h3>It hasn&#8217;t been quite so simple as that &#8211; it&#8217;s true what they say: there aren&#8217;t many straight lines in nature&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;dark&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>My <a title=\"Mom Easter Egg\" href=\"https:\/\/kenmattson.com\/?page_id=1712\">mom<\/a> taught us to draw \u2013 and I quickly learned that if you could draw, you had power.<\/h2>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h3>When I was ten years old, <strong>1967<\/strong>, my school awarded me a scholarship to\u00a0the<\/h3>\n<h2>La Jolla Museum of Art \u2013 \u00a0Summer Art School.<\/h2>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h3>We made big, colorful pop-art cutouts and wild plaster\/wood assemblages.<\/h3>\n<h3>I can still remember the crisp ocean light pouring across large tables of artist materials \u2013 one in particular &#8211; a box of doll eyes, that closed when you tilted them back \u2013 like they were going to sleep.<\/h3>\n<h3>All that art is lost now, but I filled my pockets with those magic sleeping eyes,<\/h3>\n<h2>and I still have some!<\/h2>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h1>That\u00a0scholarship sealed my growing identity as an artist.<\/h1>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22.3&#8243;][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; Like my dad, I loved making things with my hands.<\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 1.17em; line-height: 1.5em;\">I think the first time I showed artwork in an exhibition, must have been in Jr. High, around\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1.17em; line-height: 1.5em;\">1970<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.17em; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0\u2013 a student art show.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3>Early high school, I set up a studio in the backyard and made candles \u2013 (My first attempt to make money from art).<\/h3>\n<h3>After that came stained glass &#8211; around\u00a0<strong>1975<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<h3>A demanding yet rewarding medium,\u00a0I made hundreds of windows for buildings all around Southern California.<\/h3>\n<h3>And I began entering this glasswork into a variety of local art fairs, getting my first taste of that lifestyle.<\/h3>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;dark&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Being so hands-on, the art fairs really suited me &#8211; one giant puzzle to solve!<\/h3>\n<h3>Carpentry, electrical, promotional materials, framing, sales and<\/h3>\n<h1>making the best artwork I could possibly make.<\/h1>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h3>Over three decades, I traveled through several mediums, from glass, to painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpting &#8211; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;dark&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1>The deep pleasure of making art for me, is in the journey,<\/h1>\n<h1>because it opens new horizons.<\/h1>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h3>So commission work can be a challenge &#8211; there are always tight limits &#8211; time frames, subject matter,<\/h3>\n<h2>you can&#8217;t just follow the muse.\u00a0But, they were great &#8220;On-the-Job-Training&#8221;!<\/h2>\n<h3>(and I had a family to support), so I took on a lot of commission work.<\/h3>\n<p>\u00ba<\/p>\n<h3>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/h3>\n<h3>Late one afternoon, a regular client, (for my watercolors), called me, to ask if I could paint a sixteen foot oil painting for the entry of their\u00a0restaurant, (They didn&#8217;t know that I \u00a0had never painted in oils before). Another artist had dropped out, and they needed it right away. I said: &#8220;Let me call you back tomorrow&#8221;.
