Early on I knew that I wanted to be an artist.<\/h2>\n

In my head big plans formed: go to art school, build a dream studio, live the free life of an artist,<\/h3>\n

fully immersed\u00a0\u00a0in my craft – pushing the envelope.<\/h3>\n

It hasn’t been quite so simple as that – it’s true what they say: there aren’t many straight lines in nature…<\/h3>\n

My mom<\/a> taught us to draw \u2013 and I quickly learned that if you could draw, you had power.<\/h2>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

When I was ten years old, 1967<\/strong>, my school awarded me a scholarship to\u00a0the<\/h3>\n

La Jolla Museum of Art \u2013 \u00a0Summer Art School.<\/h2>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

We made big, colorful pop-art cutouts and wild plaster\/wood assemblages.<\/h3>\n

I can still remember the crisp ocean light pouring across large tables of artist materials \u2013 one in particular – a box of doll eyes, that closed when you tilted them back \u2013 like they were going to sleep.<\/h3>\n

All that art is lost now, but I filled my pockets with those magic sleeping eyes,<\/h3>\n

and I still have some!<\/h2>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

That\u00a0scholarship sealed my growing identity as an artist.<\/h1>\n

All through Jr High and High School, I took as many art classes as I could, and entered various community art exhibitions – Like my dad, I loved making things with my hands.<\/h3>\n

I think the first time I showed artwork in an exhibition, must have been in Jr. High, around\u00a0<\/span>1970<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a student art show.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Early high school, I set up a studio in the backyard and made candles \u2013 (My first attempt to make money from art).<\/h3>\n

After that came stained glass – around\u00a01975<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n

A demanding yet rewarding medium,\u00a0I made hundreds of windows for buildings all around Southern California.<\/h3>\n

And I began entering this glasswork into a variety of local art fairs, getting my first taste of that lifestyle.<\/h3>\n

Early marriage nixed art school, (but not the art!).<\/h3>\n

\u00ba<\/h3>\n

Around 1983,<\/strong> I dove into large scale watercolor and greatly expanded participation in juried art fairs.<\/h3>\n

Freed from the long hours of labor needed to make Stained glass,<\/h3>\n

speeded my education in image making.<\/h3>\n

Being so hands-on, the art fairs really suited me – one giant puzzle to solve!<\/h3>\n

Carpentry, electrical, promotional materials, framing, sales and<\/h3>\n

making the best artwork I could possibly make.<\/h1>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

Over three decades, I traveled through several mediums, from glass, to painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpting – maturing as an artist.<\/h3>\n

The deep pleasure of making art for me, is in the journey,<\/h1>\n

because it opens new horizons.<\/h1>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

So commission work can be a challenge – there are always tight limits – time frames, subject matter,<\/h3>\n

you can’t just follow the muse.\u00a0But, they were great “On-the-Job-Training”!<\/h2>\n

(and I had a family to support), so I took on a lot of commission work.<\/h3>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

Here’s an example:<\/h3>\n

Late one afternoon, a regular client, (for my watercolors), called me, to ask if I could paint a sixteen foot oil painting for the entry of their\u00a0restaurant, (They didn’t know that I \u00a0had never painted in oils before). Another artist had dropped out, and they needed it right away. I said: “Let me call you back tomorrow”. I went to the store, bought some materials, learned to paint with oils that night, and took the job the next morning!<\/h3>\n

\u00ba<\/p>\n

It was usually like that – very high pressure – but I loved the thrills.<\/h3>\n

That’s how I learned to: oil paint, cast glass sculptures and carve large woodcuts!<\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/h4>\n

…Of course, then there was that time I spent all night painting a mural for someone’s office that turned out so badly, I had to paint white over it the next day to restore the wall – all without any pay!<\/h3>\n

For fun, I began a collaboration<\/a> with my, (first), wife, making elaborate sculptures from found objects.<\/h3>\n

I didn’t consider these sculptures as personal to me, just fantastic opportunities to play and learn together. This work was signed under her name – because they were meant to express her.<\/h3>\n

They were well received and collected, traveled the world in shows, and were highlighted in coffee table books like: “The Art of Mosaic Design<\/span>“<\/strong> and ” The Artful Teapot<\/span>“<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n

After that marriage,\u00a0I moved to Arizona<\/h2>\n

I went to a different sort of “school”,<\/h2>\n

(than the art school I had planned),<\/h2>\n

but I ended up where I aimed.<\/h2>\n

Now I’m married to the best of women:<\/h2>\n

green eyed artist, Barbara Schuppe.<\/a><\/h2>\n

I’m in a great place – muscling down on my art,<\/h2>\n

focused on: oil painting, printmaking and drawing.<\/h2>\n

And I\u2019m making my best art right\u00a0now.<\/strong><\/h2>\n
