Growing up, my parents always provided studio space,<\/h3>\n

usually a sturdy workbench in the garage, with access to all the tools.<\/h3>\n

That set the course of my life.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A private space, set aside for making what ever I want,<\/h3>\n

“Imagination’s Chamber<\/span>“,<\/h2>\n

as one writer put it.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

By the time I moved out, that workbench had expanded<\/h3>\n

\u00a0to take up\u00a0two spare rooms, the side yard and part of the garage – mostly devoted to glass working.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wherever I\u2019ve gone since, I always see things in those terms – as places to set up shop.<\/h3>\n

My first painting studio, in Santa Ana, CA, was an apartment garage, (with all our other storage).<\/h3>\n

A tiny space\u00a0– about 8\u2019x 5\u2019 with a seven foot ceiling,<\/h3>\n

but I was painting, so my world was large!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After that, with a move to Laguna Beach, I spread out a bit –<\/h3>\n

this time into a 400 sq. ft. garage, with a beautiful window view through eucalyptus trees.<\/h3>\n

perfect for me at the time – very productive.<\/h3>\n

After buying a house, my space enlarged even more, but so did my artistic ambitions,<\/h3>\n

so it got very crowded very fast.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With lots of new projects all going on at once,<\/h3>\n

it seemed like half my time was spent just moving things around to make space.<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve invented studios for most of my life, so around 2006, when I got the chance to build one, I took it.<\/h3>\n

At that time, I was single so it was designed just for me – 4,000 square feet, 18\u2019 ceilings, with loft areas,<\/h3>\n

a dream space.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

What’s next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

All these studios have been in my home, the current one is<\/em> my home.<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

That’s perfect for round-the-clock work,<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

but not so good for privacy – a\u00a0necessity when pressing into new territory.<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

(And a great excuse for\u00a0planning the next\u00a0one!) – This time a good walk from where we sleep…<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

And those plans have begun! – we’re moving to the mountains of Utah next year.<\/h3>\n
