My mom<\/a> gave to life a magic quality,<\/h3>\n

From the start I was an explorer.<\/h3>\n

I chose to make things with my hands,<\/h3>\n

first inventing with metal, ceramics and wood.<\/h3>\n

Then in 1973, glass fully captured my attention.<\/h3>\n

I skipped college and spent the next ten years mastering line and color sense.<\/h3>\n

By 1984, I was looking for a more direct way to make pictures.<\/h3>\n

Connecting with the vibrancy of watercolor,<\/h3>\n

I began to paint in earnest.<\/h3>\n

But again by 1993 I grew restless with the limitations of my medium.<\/h3>\n

I needed something that I could wrestle with<\/h3>\n

physically \u2013 a tougher material.<\/h3>\n

I began developing my own way of working with oils:<\/h3>\n

I paint on wood panels that I carve with mallet and chisels.<\/h3>\n

The physicality<\/span><\/a><\/span> of this new work is important to me,<\/h3>\n

both in the making of it and the finished piece.<\/h3>\n

The materials and sculptural qualities of the artwork itself<\/span><\/h3>\n

are as vital as the images portrayed.<\/h2>\n
